  • Dashcam footage shows a Jacksonville sheriff’s officer executing a PIT maneuver to stop an accused drunk driver who entered an active Ironman race course and nearly struck cyclists.

A California police officer had a close call last month when a passing motorist slammed into his motorcycle during a traffic stop.

The scary incident happened at around 11:30 a.m. May 27 after a Beaumont police motorcycle officer was conducting a traffic stop along a roadway, the department stated in a social media post that included body camera footage. The officer had parked his motorcycle behind the stopped vehicle and was at the vehicle's driver's side window.

In the body camera footage, an SUV can be seen coming up behind the officer at the stopped vehicle. The vehicle then crashes into the police motorcycle, sending debris flying and coming dangerously close to the officer.

The driver of the vehicle hadn't been focused on the road when the crash happened, police said.

According to the department, the officer and stopped driver were uninjured. The officer's motorcycle, however, suffered significant damage, which put it out of service.

"This incident is a strong reminder of the important work our officers do every day to keep our roadways safe—and how quickly situations can change in a split second," the department stated.
