A naked 37-year-old man is accused of leading Wisconsin police on a bizarre high-speed chase after he allegedly stole an ambulance Tuesday.

The wild pursuit began around 5 p.m. when a bystander jumped into the driver's seat of a Wisconsin Rapids ambulance after a patient had been loaded into the vehicle, WISN-TV reports. Medics tried to stop the suspect—later identified as Benjamin Feltz—but they were forced to stop because of safety concerns, and Feltz sped away with the emergency lights on and the patient still inside.

The suspect evaded authorities, kicking off a multi-agency chase that included Wisconsin Rapids police, Wood County sheriff's deputies and Wisconsin State Patrol troopers. Deflation devices were deployed, but Feltz maneuvered around them, cutting through dirt roads at a landfill and hitting speeds of over 70 mph during the roughly 18-mile pursuit.

The chase finally ended near Pittsville when the ambulance's front passenger-side tire was deflated, and the vehicle veered off the road. A drone was deployed to assess the scene before authorities approached the ambulance.

Body camera footage released this week shows Wisconsin Rapids police confronting the suspect, who exited the ambulance naked. Officers ordered Feltz to surrender, and he complied before being handcuffed and taken into custody.

Feltz was booked on tentative charges that include a third offense for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. It's unclear why Feltz was naked at the time of the incident.

The patient in the ambulance was taken to the hospital and treated following the chase.
