PORTER, IN — Police released a dramatic video showing how they brought an end to a pursuit Wednesday night that topped 100 mph and wound its way through various county roads.
Porter police said they attempted to stop the 2004 Dodge Neon shortly before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on allegations of tailgating and passing other vehicles in a double-yellow line area along 700 N. Waverly Road.
The driver, later identified as a 31-year-old Portage man, fled east on U.S. 20 at over 100 mph and then led officers along various county roads in Westchester and Pine townships, according to Porter police.
In the area of Burdick Road and County Road 575 East, a pursuing Porter police officer executed what is known as a Precision Immobilization Technique Maneuver (PIT).
During the maneuver, an officer uses a patrol vehicle to make contact with the fleeing vehicle, causing it to lose traction and spin.
"The successful PIT forced the suspect vehicle into a farm field where he surrendered to officers without further resistance or injury," police said.
The driver was arrested and faces criminal charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, possession of marijuana and reckless driving, according to police.
The accused appeared to remain in custody Thursday morning at the Porter County Jail. Charges were not yet filed as of mid-morning.
