Dashcam: Conn. Officer Shot while Responding to Crash Scene

Oct. 10, 2022
Dramatic dashboard camera footage captured a driver fleeing a crash scene on foot and opening fire on a New Haven police officer as he pulled up in his cruiser.

Frightening dashboard camera footage was released last week of a Connecticut police officer who was shot while checking out a crash.

The shooting happened at about 1:30 a.m. Friday as New Haven police responded to a crash in the city's Far Haven neighborhood, WTIC-TV reports. When Officer Chad Curry reached the scene, the driver in the crash, Jose Claudio, opened fire while the officer was still in his cruiser. At least one shot can be seen striking Curry's windshield in the dashcam footage.

Curry was struck in the shoulder and the ear. He returned fire as Claudio fled on foot, and the two exchanged around two dozen gunshots.

Claudio was finally captured following a 12-hour manhunt. He is charged with assault in the first degree, assault of a public safety officer, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment, and he is being held on a $1 million bond.

Curry, who had been praised in July for his de-escalation of a potentially suicidal man, was taken to the hospital and later released. He's the first New Haven police officer to be shot in the line of duty in three years.

The shooting is under investigation.
