The daughter of a North Carolina police officer who was killed in the line of duty nearly two decades ago has decided to follow in her father's law enforcement footsteps.

In a video released by the Greenville Police Department in conjunction with National Police Week, Ashley Campbell discussed her plans to join the agency. Her father, Officer Jason Campbell, died in a 2007 crash while responding to a call.

“Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a law enforcement officer,” Campbell said in the video. “Early last year, I believe it was January or February, I prayed a lot about it, and I just felt the lord call me to law enforcement.”

Campbell is currently going through Basic Law Enforcement Training. Once she graduates, she has plans to join her fallen father's department.

"During Police Week, we remember the heroes we have lost," the department stated. "But stories like Ashley’s remind us that their legacy lives on through the people they inspired, the family they left behind and the generations that continue to answer the call to serve."

Here are few things Campbell had to say in her video:

Pursuing a career in law enforcement

"A lot of people are surprised that this is the path I chose because of what happened with my dad. But for me, it just fuels me more to continue on his legacy and to be courageous just like him."

The significance of going through police training

"Being in the police academy means so much to me. I think about my day every day and just knowing that he did a lot of the things that I'm doing, it's just a really awesome feeling, and I think I'm making him proud."

What she's learned in the academy

"It's taught me a lot about myself, and it's given me a lot of confidence because I'm doing things that I never thought I'd be able to do."

What she thinks her dad would think of her law enforcement aspirations

"I think if I could talk to him, he would tell me that he was proud of me and that I'm a good shot. He would probably also tell me I was crazy for doing this."
