A large-scale recovery effort is underway after a group of 15 skiers were caught in an avalanche near Lake Tahoe.
According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, six of the skiers have been rescued while nine others remain missing after the incident occurred in the Castle Peak area of Truckee at 1130 a.m. on Tuesday.
Ski rescue teams were dispatched from both Boreal Mountain Ski Resort and Tahoe Donner’s Alder Creek Adventure Center to make their way to the six known survivors, who were rescued amid extreme weather conditions.
Two of those rescued were transported to a hospital for treatment, police said.
Rescue efforts remain in progress for the rest of the skiers with at least 46 emergency first responders taking part in “highly dangerous” weather conditions.
The Sierra Avalanche Center previously issued an avalanche warning for Feb. 17 and Feb. 18 indicating that avalanche danger in the backcountry is high.
Agencies assisting the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office include the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Washoe County Search and Rescue and Truckee Fire.
The incident remains active and ongoing.
