A woman hit by a train in southeastern Kansas was saved by a deputy who was at the right place at the right time, authorities say.
Dispatchers received a call around 9:20 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, that a pedestrian had been struck by a train, according to the Labette County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Gabe Vitt was a couple of blocks away from the train crossing in Parsons and quickly responded to provide aid to the woman, the sheriff’s office said.
Vitt found the woman with a partially severed leg. The deputy was able to apply a makeshift tourniquet through his “quick response and training,” the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook.
The deputy stayed on the scene and consoled the woman until additional first responders arrived.
“Because of Deputy Vitt’s quick actions and collected demeanor, (he) helped save the woman’s life and kept her calm and coherent during a life-threatening event,” the sheriff said. “I am proud that we have officers like Deputy Vitt serving our community.”
An update on the woman’s condition was not given. It’s unclear what led to the crash, and police in Parsons continue to investigate the incident.
