A Dinwiddie County, Va. Sheriff's K-9 died after being hit by a car during a training exercise last week.
Sheriff's K-9 Maco was taking part in the exercise with his handler, Deputy Brock Tomlin, at the Five Forks Battlefield on Nov. 1 when the incident occurred, according to a news release.
The German Shepherd-Belgium Malinois began chasing deer near where the exercise was taking place, eventually running onto Courthouse Road before being struck.
The dog joined the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office K-9 team in July 2012 and specialized in drug and narcotics detection, tracking and article location.
"Hardly a day went by that Maco didn't find drugs," Maj. William Knott said in statement.
Officials said that Maco was assigned to Tomlin in March and that the two became very close. Maco was cremated and the remains were given to the deputy.
The Sheriff's Office is planning a memorial service.
