CENTERVILLE, Mass. -- Barnstable police Detective Richard Morse was waiting on the sidewalk for the car to pass, holding the cup of coffee he stopped to pick up on his way home from church at around 1:45 p.m. Sunday.
But just before Morse could cross, the car came to halt directly in front of him at the Centerville Shopping Plaza on Route 28, the driver's-side door bursting open to a woman screaming for help.
"My friend just shot up, and she stopped breathing, and she's turning blue," yelled the driver, whom Barnstable police Sgt. Sean Sweeney identified Tuesday as Tori Guiducci, 19, of Plymouth.
In the passenger seat, Morse found a 20-year-old Centerville woman slumped over, without a pulse. He pulled her out of the car, laid her on the ground and began to perform CPR, Sweeney told the Times on Tuesday.
Then Morse heard the voice of Marion Spang.
"I know CPR," shouted Spang, a Cape Cod Hospital nurse who, like Morse, was off-duty at the time. "Can I help?"
As an ambulance rushed to the scene, Morse and Spang provided breaths and chest compressions to the 20-year-old's lifeless body. And after a hectic few minutes, Morse could see that her eyes had opened, Sweeney said.
The woman was revived, rescued from an apparent heroin overdose, and taken by the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department to Cape Cod Hospital.
Guiducci will be summonsed to court on a charge of heroin possession, Sgt. Stephen McGuire said.
