    Nov. 7, 2011
Officers say they the suspect to drop his weapon, but he refused.

Indianapolis police fatally shot a man on the city's north side early Saturday morning.

Officers were called to the 800 block of West 29th Street about 2 a.m. after a 911 call reporting shots fired in the area and a man lying beside an abandoned house.

"The initial officer arrived and observed a male lying between the houses holding a gun in his hand," said Kendale Adams, Indianapolis police public information officer. "Officers immediately ordered the subject to drop the weapon, but the subject refused."

Police said the man pointed the gun at officers.

"Officers, fearing for their safety, fired at the subject, subsequently striking and killing him," Adams said.

The man, whose identity wasn?t immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are investigating the shooting, and an autopsy will be performed.
