LAWRENCE, Mass. -- An alert police officer likely prevented a shooting near Bali's nightclub on Essex Street early yesterday morning, Chief John Romero said.

Patrolman Michael Mangan saw a middle-aged man arguing with two women and another man near a parking lot adjacent to Bali's shortly after the 2 a.m. closing time, police said.

Mangan drew his gun and ordered him to put his hands up when he saw the man place his right hand in his waistband. The man started walking toward him, his hand still in his waist band, Mangan wrote.

Mangan subdued the man with a kick to the stomach and Patrolman Carleton Trombly removed a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun from his waist band.

Rene Graziano, 58, of 61 Essex St., was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm while intoxicated and disorderly conduct. Romero said he will revoke Graziano's gun permit.
