PETERSBURG, Va. -- Two Petersburg men were arrested Tuesday night after an attempted traffic stop in Colonial Heights.

Colonial Heights police Capt. Dann Fergusson said that around 8:30 p.m., an officer attempted to stop a vehicle traveling on the Boulevard toward Petersburg for a traffic violation. When the vehicle finally did stop on the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge, the driver -- identified by police as Oliver Spratley, 29, of North Whitehill Drive in Petersburg -- jumped out of the car and ran toward Pocahontas Island.

The officer who made the traffic stop chased the driver. Petersburg police assisted in the search.

"Anytime we cross over into a neighboring jurisdiction, we let them know we're there," Fergusson said.

Within about five minutes, police had apprehended the suspect, according to Fergusson.

Spratley was charged with misdemenaor eluding police, possession of cocaine, driving on a suspended driver's license and obstruction of justice.

The passenger of the vehicle, 34-year-old James Spratley, also of North Whitehill Drive in Petersburg, stayed with the vehicle and was also arrested.

James Spratley was arrested for possession of marijuana and possession of cocaine. He was also arrested as a fugitive who is facing two unrelated charges of assault and battery and domestic violence in Petersburg.
