AUBURNDALE, Fla.--
Officials say an Auburndale police officer was shot while investigating a domestic call at a home on Diamond Ridge Drive Friday night.
Police responded to the home around 10:00 p.m. after receiving a 911call from a young girl who stated her parents were fighting. Dispatchers were able to get a hold of the mother who stated everything was fine and she and her daughter had left the residence.
Officers continued their response to the home to ensure that everything was okay.
Polk County officials say the first police officer to arrive at the home was shot through the front door as she approached. The officer has been identified as 26-year-old Stacy Lee Booth. Officials say Booth was shot in the arm and the stomach with a shotgun.
Booth was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where she underwent emergency surgery, officials say. Booth is listed in critical, but stable condition.
The suspect refused to surrender and continued to shoot at police from inside his home, investigators say. Officials told WFTV the Polk County Sheriff's SWAT team deployed gas canisters into the house and the suspect was removed unconscious around 1:00 a.m.
He has been identified as 36-year-old Michael Lester. Lester was checked out at a local hospital before being booked into the Polk County jail.
Officials say Lester has an extensive criminal history.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office, Florida Highway Patrol, Winter Haven Police Department, and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office all assisted in the incident.
