An El Cajon police officer severely injured in a shootout last week was released from the hospital Monday.
Officer Jarred Slocum, a four-year veteran and husband and father of two, was shot in the head as he arrived in the 1000 block of Prince Street on Aug. 21 after police received reports that a man with a gun had entered a house and set it on fire.
During the standoff, a videographer captured dramatic footage of a bloodied Slocum as he returned fire before collapsing against a fence. His partner, Officer Tim McFarland, pulled him to safety.
10News learned Slocum, 28, was shot in the left temple and the bullet traveled around his skull and exited in the back of his head. Doctors said despite the severity of his injury he has shown significant improvement in his recovery.
Police said the gunman, Kevin Collier, is believed to have shot and killed his 1-year-old daughter and his mother-in-law before setting fire to the home.
According to police, the body of Collier's daughter, Rhilee, was found in a truck next to the home. Collier and his 51-year-old mother-in-law Beverli Rakov were found dead inside the home. Collier's death was ruled a suicide by the county Medical Examiner's Office last week.
