Mesa Police K-9 Jake is back to 100 percent after being stabbed multiple times by a suspect last month.

A Mesa, Ariz. police dog stabbed during a standoff in late April is back to 100 percent.

K-9 Jake's handler, Officer Scott Callender, said that his partner has made a full recovery after undergoing emergency surgery, according to KNXV-TV.

Jake was stabbed several times during the confrontation on April 26 with Chad Bogle, who died from gunshot wounds following an exchange of gunfire.

Mesa officers responded shortly after 7 p.m. to a home southwest of Broadway Road and Stapley Drive for a reported a burglary in progress. A neighbor told police that he confronted Bogle, who pointed a gun at him.

Police said that the suspect came out of the home several times and ignored officers' commands. Bean bag rounds were fired at the suspect before they ultimately sent Jake after him.

Jake bit Bogle, but the suspect dragged the dog into the home where officers believe he stabbed him multiple times before releasing him out the front door. The dog's handler picked him up and drove him to the veterinarian.

"As it was happening, I felt very helpless because I knew there was nothing I could do to help him," the officer told the news station.

Despite his recovery, Jake was already set to retire and with not return to duty.
