The Fulton County Sheriff's Office Thursday was mourning the death of a K-9 deputy from cancer.
Deputy "Marco," a 6-year-old Belgian Malinois assigned to Sgt. Corey Henry, was euthanized Wednesday after a veterinarian discovered inoperable cancer, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan.
Marco was trained as an "all-patrol" dog, meaning he could detect the presence of illegal drugs, search for suspects and track, Flanagan said. When Henry and Marco became partners in 2009, they spent 13 weeks in training together before hitting the streets, she said.
Marco was well-respected for his high level of intelligence, persistence, training and disposition, Flanagan said.
"He gave 110% everyday on the job and was a loved member of Sgt. Henry's family with whom he lived," she said. "Marco's sudden passing was a shock to the agency and he will be greatly missed."
