April 01--CHINO -- An allegedly armed man held authorities at bay for nearly three hours Sunday night in a Chino neighborhood before finally surrendering to police.

The unidentified and distraught man was taken into custody around 6:45 p.m. outside an apartment complex in the 5400 block of Riverside Drive Sunday.

According to initial dispatch reports, the man had been despondent over a recent fight with his girlfriend. The woman reportedly told him to leave their home and that's when the upset man said he began to cut himself with a razor blade.

Around 4:15 p.m., Chino Police officers found the man sitting in a small, silver-colored vehicle. When officers approached the vehicle, they spotted what appeared the be a semi-automatic handgun in the man's lap. After repeatedly refusing to comply with officers' commands, police officials called for assistance from San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies and Ontario Police Department.

The surrounded apartment complexes were evacuated and one family, including a small child in a stroller, had to take refuge behind a psychic medium business for several minutes before deputies could safely escort them away from the scene.

The agitated man turned on his vehicle as SWAT officers trained their weapons on him. He refused to put turn off the vehicle unless he could see his infant daughter, according to dispatch reports.

At one point, the man shouted out to officers to shoot him.

Dozens of officers and deputies, including at least one K-9 unit, stayed at the scene trying to convince the man to surrender.

As the scene unfolded nearly 50 people lined the nearby streets straining to see what was taking place.

"We live down the street but heard the sirens and the helicopter and came out," said one young girl who stood on 11th Street near Riverside Drive with her father.

The girl, who did not want to be identified, said the neighborhood is usually quiet and could see why such a large presence from various law enforcement agencies would cause such a stir in the area.

"We have crashes and six months ago they robbed this bank," she said motioning to the California Bank and Trust on the corner of Riverside Drive and 11th Street, "but that's it. Nothing like this."

As the evening began to cool, one couple brought out lawn chairs and wrapped themselves in blankets to watch the drama unfold.

Despite the man's repeated pleads to police to shoot him, he eventually surrendered after being allowed to park his vehicle at the apartment complex.

Before he was taken away in the back of a Chino Police vehicle, the man was allowed to see his young daughter.

Authorities at the scene would not comment on what offenses the man would be booked under or where he would be jailed.
