Nov. 23--An off-duty Detroit police officer fatally shot a 25-year-old Detroit man early Thursday when police said the man shot at the officer when he tried to intervene in what police characterized as "a domestic altercation."

The altercation happened outside a gas station on West 7 Mile and Pierson, west of Evergreen, Sgt. Eren Stephens said.

The dispute was between a woman and the man, who police said was the woman's boyfriend.

The officer was struck by at least one bullet fired by the man about 2:55 a.m.

The nine-year veteran of the department "was treated at a local hospital, (and) he is listed in temporarily serious condition," Stephens said. The incident is being investigated by the Detroit police Homicide Division and the Internal Affairs section, she said.

The officer was placed on administrative duty during the investigation, which is a standard procedure after a shooting, she said.

The incident was one of three fatal shootings in the city reported Thursday by police.

Around noon in the 7700 block of Rosemont -- on the city's west side, near the Southfield Freeway and Tireman -- a 20-year-old woman and 32-year-old man were found fatally shot.

Police released no further details but said they are seeking tips in the case. Anyone with information should call the Homicide Division at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAKUP (800-773-2587).
