N.Y. Detective Seriously Wounded in Gunfire Exchange with Suspect

A Yonkers police detective is in serious but stable condition after he was shot in the abdomen while trying to detain a suspect as a member of a multi-agency task force investigating a report of illegal guns.

A New York police officer was wounded in an exchange of gunfire that left a suspect dead Wednesday.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. as FBI's Westchester Safe Streets Task Force was investigating a report of illegal guns in Yonkers, WPIX-TV reports. Members of the Yonkers Police Department were part of the multi-agency task foce.

While following three suspects into a bodega, a Yonkers police detective tried to detain one of the trio. That's when the 28-year-old suspect drew a concealed handgun and shot the officer in the abdomen.

The suspect was then shot by a federal agent. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The wounded officer was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He suffered damage to his stomach and intestines and lost a significant amount of blood. The officer was in serious but stable condition.

The two other suspects were taken into custody, and two illegal guns were seized. 

Police said the wounded detective—his identity and the suspect's identity have not been released—is a 27-year decorated veteran. According to WPIX, the detective had been set to retire Friday.
