A police officer at Los Angeles International Airport was assaulted by a passenger who was told he couldn't board a flight because he was too intoxicated
The incident happened at about 1:40 p.m. Thursday as a man was trying to get on a Delta Air Lines flight headed to New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Fox News reports. Police were called to the departure gate when the passenger became verbally abusive with employees.
The man was escorted from the gate by police, so that he could get a ride from the airport. But things escalated between an officer and the passenger.
"When they got to the bottom of the escalator for arrivals, the officer handed the suspect his ID back and afterwards the suspect had a moment of rage and he assaulted the officer," Sgt. Rob Pedregon with airport police told Fox News.
According to police, the passenger punched the officer in the chest. The man then was tackled to the ground and arrested.
"I'm not going to comply until you tell me why," the man told officers, according to TMZ. "It's people like you. You ruined my (expletive) night, dude."
The man faces battery on a police officer and public intoxication charges.
Thursday's incident was the second altercation involving an unruly Delta passenger in just over a week. The FBI took a woman into custody two days before Christmas after she caused a disturbance on a Tampa, Florida, to Atlanta flight that resulted in injuries.
