SAINT PETER, Minnesota -- A Saint Peter police officer who was shot during a barricaded suspect incident last week is expected to be released from the hospital and return home Friday, according to the Saint Peter Police Department.
Officer Austin Buss will be escorted home by law enforcement officers from numerous jurisdictions in a procession traveling south on U.S. Highway 169 into Saint Peter between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Community members have been invited to gather along the boulevard on U.S. Highway 169/North Minnesota Avenue between Broadway Avenue and Union Street to welcome him home. The department asked attendees to remain in the boulevard area for safety.
Buss was wounded June 18 during a barricaded suspect incident that followed a vehicle pursuit originating in Mankato.
According to the Saint Peter Police Department, officers with the Mankato Police Department attempted to stop a speeding vehicle, but the driver, an adult male, allegedly fled north on Highway 169 into Saint Peter.
Officers near Highway 99 deployed a tire deflation device in an attempt to stop the vehicle. Police said the driver avoided the device, continued through Saint Peter and eventually stopped in the 2100 block of Bunker Lane before entering a residence, prompting a barricaded suspect situation.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded and secured the area while nearby residents were placed under a shelter-in-place advisory. Officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but the negotiations were unsuccessful, according to the department.
During the incident, multiple shots were fired, and Buss was struck in the arm. He was transported to River's Edge Hospital & Clinic before being airlifted to a hospital in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area for additional treatment.
Following the shooting, officers entered the residence and located the suspect deceased. Authorities later lifted the shelter-in-place advisory and said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation at the request of the Saint Peter Police Department. Officials said body-worn cameras were activated during the incident, and additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
The Saint Peter Police Department said support resources have been made available to personnel affected by the incident and thanked the responding law enforcement agencies, firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, dispatchers and medical professionals who assisted during the response.
