ASHLAND, New Hampshire -- A man was killed and a police officer was wounded in a shooting incident in Ashland Monday night, the Attorney General’s Office said in a news release.

Ashland Police performed a traffic stop on Main Street, according to the report. Authorities said a man produced a gun and exchanged fire with the officers.

"During the exchange, the adult male was shot," the release said of the suspect. "He was later pronounced deceased at the scene."

The man shot one officer, wounding him, the AG said, adding that the officer was being treated at an area hospital.

The release said no other people were injured and there was no ongoing threat to the public.

The names of the officers involved in shooting were withheld pending the conclusion of formal interviews, and the name of the deceased man will be released following notification of next of kin and an autopsy, according to the release.

Investigators said they were assessing if police body cameras or cruiser camera footage captured the incident.
