ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — One person was killed and an Adams County sheriff’s deputy remains in intensive care after a shooting early Friday at the Caraway Apartments.
Sheriff Gene Claps said deputies were initially called to the apartment complex at 7401 Broadway around 2:30 a.m. on a disturbance report involving weapons, according to KUSA-TV.
Deputies attempted to contact a group of individuals during that call, but several ran from the area. One person was located and detained, while deputies remained nearby searching for others who fled.
Around 5 a.m., deputies encountered individuals matching the earlier descriptions inside the apartment complex, Claps said. When deputies attempted to make contact, the individuals ran, prompting a foot pursuit and the establishment of a perimeter. During the search, a deputy was shot multiple times in a stairwell.
Claps said two men were found nearby, including one who had been shot. Both the wounded deputy and the injured man were transported to a hospital. The man was pronounced dead shortly before 7:30 a.m. The deputy remains hospitalized in intensive care.
Another man found near the stairwell was taken into custody without injury, and additional individuals were detained later. Claps said investigators believe all individuals responsible for the incident are now in custody.
Authorities have not released the identity of the person who was killed or those detained. Claps did not specify who fired the shots or how the deceased individual was involved in the shooting.
A significant law enforcement presence remained at the apartment complex through Friday evening, with the possibility of extending into Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team are leading the investigation.
The incident prompted delayed starts at several nearby Mapleton Public Schools due to the ongoing police activity.
