NORTH CODORUS TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania -- The injured K-9 lieutenant who was ambushed in North Codorus Township, York County, with five of his colleagues last month issued a statement on social media while he recovers in the hospital.

On Wednesday morning, York County Sheriff’s Office Lt. David Godfrey thanked everyone for their support during his recovery.

“I will keep this short, thank you,” the post said. “From the deepest part of my soul. Your Prayers, Thoughts, Kind Words, and just being there. You all helped me more than you will ever know. Thank you.”

Godfrey’s statement was posted alongside a TikTok video talking about faith.

Godfrey, a 24-year veteran of the York County Sheriff’s Office, is a certified Master Trainer through the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers. He also formerly served as the handler for K9 Captain Dargo, who died last year.

Godfrey was called to North Codorus Township on Sept. 17 to assist Northern York County Regional police with drone surveillance as they attempted to serve an arrest warrant to 24-year-old Matthew Ruth.

Ruth then ambushed the officers from inside his ex-girlfriend’s home. During the firefight, Godfrey exchanged gunfire with Ruth and was critically injured, according to officials.

The ambush attack killed three Northern York County Regional Police officers: Sgt. Cody Becker, Det. Isaiah Emenheiser and Det. Mark Baker.

Another officer from the Northern York County Regional Police Department was injured in the shooting but was released from WellSpan York Hospital last week. The hospital noted both Godfrey and the now-released officer were upgraded to “satisfactory” condition.

The York County Sheriff’s Office is hosting its ninth annual K-9 Spaghetti Dinner on Oct. 5, where it will raise money for its K-9 program. Donations can also be made online.
