Shots were fired in Decatur Tuesday when authorities say a man intentionally struck an off-duty officer with a vehicle as his home.
The officer was hospitalized but is expected to be OK. The man who struck him is in jail.
The incident happened at 5:17 p.m. Decatur police spokeswoman Irene Cardenas-Martinez said the officer was at his home with his family in the 2200 block of 11th Street S.E. when a man identified as 54-year-old Gregory Martin Hill approached the officer’s residence in a vehicle.
As the officer approached Hill’s vehicle to make contact, Hill sped away, striking a vehicle and a mailbox in the process. Hill then proceeded to drive towards the officer in an apparent attempt to run him over before striking a tree, Cardenas-Martinez said.
The officer, whose name has not been released, retreated to his home to retrieve his weapon when Hill followed him up the driveway to his carport.
Hill returned to his vehicle as the officer returned outside to detain him. Hill then accelerated towards the officer, while the officer was in his front yard.
The officer fired multiple shots at the vehicle as Hill struck him with the vehicle. Hill was not struck by the gunfire.
The officer and other responding on-duty officers who arrived on the scene were able to place Hill under arrest. He was charged with second-degree assault and booked into the Morgan County Jail.
A judge set a $50,000 cash bond for Hill.
The officer was taken to Huntsville Hospital. He was expected to be treated and released later Tuesday night.
Authorities did not disclose a motive. It was not immediately clear whether the officer and suspect know each other.
Cardenas-Martinez said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
