Gladstone police shot a Happy Valley woman Monday after she escaped from a squad car and shot an officer, prosecutors say.
Officers stopped Yvette Lares Garcia about 8 p.m. for a traffic violation and found she was wanted on suspicion of felony theft in Texas, according to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office.
Garcia asked Sgt. Travis Hill and Officer Clement Yau to take her to her Happy Valley home to check on her dogs before booking her into the Clackamas County Jail, officials said.
After arriving at the home, Garcia broke away from Hill and Yau and ran inside, officials said. She grabbed a handgun, began firing and shot Hill in the leg, according to the district attorney’s office.
Hill and Yau returned fire, and Yau shot Garcia, officials said.
Other law enforcement officers arrived and aided Garcia and Hill, officials said.
The shootout occurred in the area of Southeast Causey Avenue between Southeast Stevens Road and Monterey Avenue about 10 p.m. Monday, according to a Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office tweet. In that area are a Clackamas Fire station, Mt. Scott Elementary School and Eagle Landing Golf Course.
Garcia and Hill were taken to a nearby hospital, where they’re stable. Officials said Garcia was seriously hurt.
