A chain reaction accident forced a state police trooper to leap over an interstate guard rail to get out of the way of his own patrol call during a traffic stop in Onondaga.

NEDROW, NY—A New York state police officer was injured Saturday after he dove over a guard rail to avoid getting hit by a car on Interstate 81.

The three-car accident was reported just after 1 p.m. near the Nedrow entrance ramp to I-81, state police spokesman Jack Keller said. Trooper Timothy D. LeFever was walking back to his patrol car after completing a traffic stop of a 2018 Audi A4 on I-81 northbound in the town of Onondaga, he said.

A blue 2012 Volkswagen slammed into a white 2020 Hyundai that was slowing down because the patrol car with emergency lights activated was stopped on the shoulder, Keller said. The blue Volkswagen then slammed into the back of the patrol car, he said.

LeFever had to jump over the guard rail to avoid getting hit by his vehicle, Keller said. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse with non-life threatening injuries, he said.

The driver of the blue SUV, Brian Osadchey, 50, of Lafayette, was also taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Keller said. Osadchey was ticketed for the unsafe lane change, he said.

The driver of the Hyundai, Emily A. DeSantis, 24, of Riverhead, and her 24-year-old passenger were not injured in the crash, Keller said.

State police were assisted at the scene by the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, the Nedrow Fire Department, the Onondaga Nation Fire Department and TLC Ambulance Services.

State police are still investigating the crash.
