Three Boston Officers Injured During Attacking of Library Worker

Pepper spray was needed to subdue a man who is accused of punching, biting and throwing a tarp at officers as they tried to arrest him.

A man who was allegedly seen masturbating in front of the Boston Public Library's Copley branch Tuesday morning is also accused of assaulting a BPL employee and police officers.

Three Boston police officers ended up suffering non-life threatening injuries, and they were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police officers at about 8:32 a.m. responded to a report of assault and battery at BPL's Copley branch.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a man was allegedly seen masturbating in front of the library. The man, later identified as Cornelio Conley, 43, of Boston, was asked to leave by library staff. Conley then apparently became combative and assaulted a BPL employee.

When police officers approached Conley to arrest him, he began to resist the officers. He's accused of throwing a tarp, which struck one of the officers.

Conley also punched and bit officers, police said. Officers ended up using pepper spray to try to subdue Conley. He was eventually taken into custody.

Boston EMS treated Conley for exposure to the pepper spray, while three police officers went to the hospital.

Conley is being charged with lewd, wanton and lascivious conduct; two counts of assault and battery; four counts of assault and battery on a police officer; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; malicious destruction of property; and resisting arrest.

Conley is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.
