Multiple people were killed and a police officer wounded in a Sandy neighborhood in a reported shooting and a subsequent exchange of gunfire with responding officers.
Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey said the officers were fired upon and returned fire. He said a Sandy police officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds but is hospitalized in stable condition and expected to survive.
Huskey did not say how many people were killed, only that “multiple” victims were deceased.
The first call to police came around 4 p.m., when Sandy Police and Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance and possible shooting in the city of 13,000 southeast of Portland.
Soon after, police from agencies across the Portland metro locked down the area surrounding the 39500 block of Evans Street and issued a “shelter in place” order for nearby residents.
Police later said the shooter was holed up in a residence. Officers surrounded a house and approached it in an armored vehicle.
A man emerged and was arrested just before 8 p.m.
“They surrendered to law enforcement and there was no incident,” Huskey told reporters later. “He surrendered peacefully. There is no ongoing community threat. Everything is safe at this time.”
Huskey said Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office detectives and major crimes deputies were still processing the scenes of the shootings and talking to witnesses.
“This is a traumatic event for our community and the police department and I know many people are grieving,” Huskey said. “I ask everyone in our community keep the victims, our injured officer and families, friends and other first responders in their thoughts tonight.”
Ellie Ison, 21, a resident of an apartment in the area, said she was following police advice to stay locked in her apartment around 5:30 p.m.
She said she heard someone “unload a whole round” of shots outside her residence earlier in the afternoon.
Molalla Mayor Scott Keyser posted about the incident on Facebook as it was unfolding, saying:
“Please join me in keeping all of our first responders in your prayers as they respond to the incident in Sandy,” he wrote, adding, “We have heard reports that one responder may have been injured, and we pray for their healing, comfort, and strength.”
