A hostage situation in Chatham County Tuesday afternoon left a man dead and a deputy injured, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies responded Tuesday afternoon to a person barricaded inside a home near the intersection of Pittsboro Goldston Road and U.S. 421, the Sheriff’s Office said.
After concerns escalated about the hostage’s safety, deputies entered the home to rescue the person, the Sheriff’s Office said.
In a late Tuesday news release, the Sheriff’s Office said the suspect in the residence is now “deceased,” but did not say how he died. He is identified as Kevin Dean Hammer, 50, of Goldston.
Senior Deputy Matthew Mitchell was shot in his arm and leg and was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct an investigation, which is standard policy for shootings involving law enforcement.
About 6:30 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said the situation no longer posed an “active threat” to the community.
About 9:30 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said it is still on the scene to investigate. A portion of the road near the intersection with U.S. 421 remains closed.
