Tiki Bar Cook Swims to escape: Gets Caught Downstream

Wanted Tiki bar cook swims away from authorities in river only to find officers waiting downstream

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

A wanted Tiki bar cook who cops say has “violent tendencies” was captured after trying to swim away in a North Carolina river.

It turned out that officers were waiting for Jesse Lee Boyd downstream.

Boyd, 38, made the fruitless attempt to escape after authorities closed in on him over the weekend at the Geneva Riverside Tiki Bar in Lake Lure, according to cops.

A foot chase ensued after Boyd was tipped off that cops were waiting for him in the management office, authorities said. He jumped in the Rocky Broad River but was eventually forced to give himself up when he found officers positioned on a bridge and on the banks below.

“We saw two assault rifles pointed at the man,” Riverside Event Center manager Calyssa Jones told WLOS. “You could definitely tell it was a very serious situation.”

Lake Lure cops said Monday that they were warned Saturday night that Boyd was in the jurisdiction and that he was considered “armed and dangerous.” Cops say “incredible planning” was instrumental in the capture, and police chief Sean Humphries indicated that four officers deserved credit.

Boyd was wanted for multiple felonies, including forgery/counterfeiting that took place in Iowa. He is being held at the Rutherford County Detention Center in North Carolina on a $250,000 bond.
