A Tehama County, California Sheriff's deputy and a ride-along passenger were wounded and a suspect was dead following a shootout over the weekend.

The deputy and his passenger were both shot in a Dollar General store parking lot in Los Molinos shortly before 7:30 p.m. Saturday and both sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to The Red Bluff Daily News.

Officials said that the deputy spotted 29-year-old Jose Alfredo Barajas switching license plates on a dark gray 2018 Honda Accord and pulled over to investigate. Multiple rounds were then exchanged between Barajas and the deputy.

The deputy was struck more than once and the ride-along passenger sustained a graze wound. Both were transported to a local hospital and were listed in stable and are expected to fully recover.

The gunman led law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit north on State Route 99E and Antelope Boulevard before entering Interstate 5 heading north. He then left the road between the Red Bluff Rest Area and Hooker Creek Road, causing his vehicle to roll over. Barajas was dead at the scene, but it was not clear whether he died from injuries resulting from the shooting or the crash.

A witness claimed to see another person flee from the car following the crash, but after an extensive search of the area, it was determined that there was no second suspect.
