The Evansville, Indiana Police Department on Tuesday released surveillance and body camera footage of a man firing at officers earlier this month.
Officials say that 51-year-old Barry Freeman was targeting police as he fired his AR-15 rifle and a shotgun Evansville and Vanderburgh County patrol cars the night of May 11, according to The Courier Press.
A bystander identified as 56-year-old Jeffrey Kempf was shot and killed by the gunman while trying to check on neighbors after the first round of gunfire stopped. Authorities say that Freeman likely believed the man was a member of law enforcement.
Freeman was shot twice in the chest by city police detective Kyle Thiry about an hour after police arrived on-scene, according to the department. He died Sunday night at a local hospital.
No law enforcement officers were wounded in the ambush attack.
Three Evansville Police cars and one Vanderburgh Sheriff's Office vehicle were shot, including one car that was riddled with 23 bullet holes.
The shooting is currently under investigation.
