Two San Diego County Sherriff's deputies were wounded Wednesday and the suspected gunman was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Thursday morning following a 10-hour standoff.
The deputies responded to the home on Del Rio Avenue in Encinitas after the suspect's mother -- who had a restraining order against him -- reported around 1 p.m. that her son had shown up and stolen her car, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
They located the 22-year-old hiding inside and began negotiating with him.
After the man made threats to the deputies, they fired tear gas and the suspect opened fire on them.
One deputy sustained a severe leg wound and was hospitalized in stable condition while the other had a less serious grazing shrapnel injury to his forehead and was treated and released from the hospital.
SWAT deputies surrounded the house and the suspect threatened to fire at anyone who tried to enter.
After hours on the scene, robots were sent into the house around 1:30 a.m. to check on the suspect, and the SWAT team entered the residence to find the suspect dead.
