Law Enforcement Intelligence Units Awards Announced

    May 17, 2012
LexisNexis Risk Solutions, in conjunction with the Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Units (LEIU), announces the winners of the annual LEIU awards program.

LexisNexis Risk Solutions, in conjunction with the Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Units (LEIU), announces the winners of the annual LEIU awards program.

Awards are presented to groups or individuals who have made a significant contribution to the law enforcement criminal intelligence community.

The awards were presented during the LEIU/IALEIA Training Conference, which took place April 30-May 4, 2012, in San Diego, Calif.

This year’s awards went to the following recipients:

    • LEIU General Chairman’s Award – New Jersey Regional Operations Intelligence Center (ROIC)
    • LEIU Distinguished Service Award – Rick Morton, Orange County (Callif.) District Attorney’s (DA) Supervising Investigator
    • LEIU Special Recognition Award – Captain Gary Williams (Ret), Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD)

“These awards honor both individuals and groups that have not only contributed to the advancement of LEIU, but more importantly to the public safety of their respective communities,” said Bob Morehouse, LEIU Executive Director. “We are honored to have been able to recognize their outstanding accomplishments during our annual conference.”

The New Jersey ROIC opened in 2005 as one of the original Primary State Fusion Centers in the U.S. designated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).Managed by the New Jersey State Police, the center has not only been a leader in the national network of Fusion Centers, but it has also significantly assisted all levels of law enforcement with solving and preventing criminal activity throughout the state through the fusion of information and intelligence.

Rick Morton began his law enforcement career in 1968 with the LAPD where he worked a variety of field assignments, including six years in vice and intelligence.

Retiring as a lieutenant commander, Morton now works as a supervising investigator with the Orange County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation. During the past 18 years he has been

assigned to the Intelligence/Organized Crime Unit, the Anti-Terrorism Unit, and the Gang Target Unit.

Gary Williams had a long and distinguished 40-year career with the LAPD, retiring at the rank of captain in charge of the Major Crimes Division where he supervised several investigative units as well as the Intelligence Unit.

Williams is now focused on furthering the cause of the LEIU mission and is serving in the role of chief financial officer.

LexisNexis partners with leading industry associations to recognize officers during three major law enforcement events throughout the year, and presents the overall winner of their “One Step Closer” award during the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Annual Conference.

The awards program is designed to honor leaders in federal, state, and local government for excellence in the use of open or third-party information sources to bring government cases, problems, or investigations “one step closer” to resolution.

“LexisNexis is dedicated to supporting the law enforcement community and established our ‘One Step Closer’ awards program to highlight the exceptional work officers’ conduct protecting citizens and communities,” said Haywood J. Talcove, chief executive officer, Government, LexisNexis Risk Solutions. “We appreciate the work of LEIU and congratulate the members from LAPD, Orange County DA’s Office, and New Jersey ROIC who received the LEIU award.”
