Our journey began in 2006 when brothers Tim and Mick Fitzgerald operated a telephony consulting firm in the San Francisco Bay Area. During a conversation with the Tech Squad Supervisor for the San Francisco division of the FBI, a significant challenge was revealed: keeping up with the constant evolution of cell phone models made traditional call-recording devices ineffective. Mick proposed an innovative solution: developing a custom phone switch capable of recording calls without the need for physical attachments. This concept quickly took shape as Mick built and successfully demonstrated the first prototype on his kitchen table.
Following a successful demonstration, Tim and Mick were invited to deploy a pilot system, collaborating closely with field agents to refine functionality and enhance security. Over a critical six-month pilot period, their innovative platform evolved significantly, ultimately becoming an advanced, specialized solution tailored specifically for law enforcement needs.
After the pilot, a delegation from the FBI’s Quantico facility recognized that LETS was ahead of their own internal efforts by up to two years. Though the Bureau opted to pursue their in-house project, they granted LETS permission to offer its groundbreaking technology to the broader law enforcement community. Officially formed as a corporation in 2011, LETS, originally marketed as Orion Systems, now stands for Law Enforcement Technologies Solutions, embodying our core commitment to supporting law enforcement’s mission.
