DETROIT, Michigan - Police fatally shot a Detroit man who allegedly opened fire on officers while they were executing a search warrant of the man’s home Thursday night.

Detroit Police Deputy Chief Arnold Williams said officers were conducting the search warrant around 6:30 p.m. at a home in the 18900 block of Rosemont Avenue on the city’s west side. The search was in connection with a felonious assault that happened earlier in June, according to CBS Detroit.

As the officers entered the home, they were met with gunfire by the suspect, Williams said. Officers returned gunfire and fatally shot the suspect. His name and age have not been released.

Police reviewed the bodycam footage from the incident, which confirmed the results of their preliminary investigation. The chief said a deeper investigation remains open, with the Michigan State Police expected to handle the review as part of the homicide task force process.

Williams said the suspect lived in the home and appeared to be the only occupant at the time of the shooting. Police have not released any information about the officer who killed the suspect.
