JURUPA VALLEY, California -- A Riverside County Sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man who allegedly advanced toward the deputy while swinging a hammer during an early morning response in Jurupa Valley on June 22.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, deputies assigned to the Jurupa Valley Sheriff's Station responded at approximately 4:19 a.m. to the 6000 block of Collins Street after receiving a report of an unknown trouble and a female screaming in the area.
When a deputy arrived, he encountered a man in the street who allegedly advanced toward him while swinging a hammer. Authorities said the deputy issued commands for the man to drop the weapon, but he did not comply.
The man continued moving toward the deputy while swinging the hammer, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Deputies rendered medical aid to the man until paramedics arrived. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
The suspect's identity has not been released.
Following the shooting, deputies searched the area for the female who was reportedly heard screaming but were unable to locate her, authorities said.
The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department policy. The deputy's identity has not been released.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Investigators assigned to the Riverside County Sheriff's Force Investigation Detail are leading the inquiry.
