SAN JOSE — A suspect in a series of armed carjackings was killed and a police sergeant was hospitalized after a multi-city pursuit ended in a hail of gunfire Wednesday afternoon in downtown San Jose, authorities said.
The suspect was shot — and also driven over by a police vehicle — at West Julian Street and Notre Dame Avenue, according to video footage.
In a video provided to this news organization, a police vehicle can be seen in the middle of the intersection, lights on and traffic stopped all around it. Shots begin to ring out.
The shooting intensifies as a person emerges from the driver’s seat of the police vehicle and runs a few dozen yards away before collapsing.
About three seconds after the person has fallen to the ground, a second police vehicle enters the frame at high speed and drives over the person, a split second after they can be seen moving on the ground.
Dozens more gunshots ring out and the person can no longer be seen moving as police then approach the suspect.
In the moments leading up to the video, a San Jose police sergeant used his vehicle to block the suspect, who was in a white car, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation. The source said the suspect then got out of the car, ran up to the sergeant’s vehicle and opened fire, wounding the sergeant.
The suspect tried to commandeer the police vehicle, but gave up, according to the source.
The sergeant was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in “stable but critical” condition, according to the San Jose Police Department.
The chain of events that led to the fatal shooting began with an armed carjacking in San Jose, according to the Hollister Police Department, which said it was notified just before 2:50 p.m. that a San Jose police helicopter was following the suspect’s vehicle.
Just after 2:55 p.m., Hollister police officers spotted the vehicle near Central Avenue and Miller Road and began following it. The chase ended when the vehicle broke down near Buena Vista Road and Westside Boulevard.
The suspect got out of the car and “there was an officer-involved shooting,” police said. No officers were injured.
Hollister police said the suspect left the area, but San Benito County sheriff’s deputies found him near Buena Vista Road and Line Street, where another shooting occurred. No deputies were injured, according to the sheriff’s office.
The suspect escaped again, stole another vehicle at gunpoint and left the city, police said.
While driving north toward San Jose, the suspect fired at California Highway Patrol officers, according to police.
Hollister police said the suspect eventually returned to San Jose, “where he again engaged the San Jose Police Department with more gunfire, and was ultimately killed.”
