Rochester, N.Y. — The man shot by a New York State trooper Friday who lunged at officers in Rochester on Friday has been arrested, according to New York State Police.

Joshua Bennett, 37, has been charged with first-degree burglary, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree menacing and menacing a police officer, police said.

Bennett has been accused of holding a woman hostage with the knife and in a home and later lunged at officers, according to police.

The man was on parole for a burglary conviction and had absconded or “skipped parole,” according to the The Democrat & Chronicle.

The trooper was a member of a United States Marshal Regional Fugitive Task Force, according to state police. The task force also included the U.S. Marshal’s Service, Rochester police and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the paper reported.

The task force arrived at 107 Fairbanks St. in Rochester to arrest the man, troopers said. Officers attempted to taser the man but were unsuccessful, troopers said.

The man fled to an adjoining house, where he held a woman hostage with a large butcher knife at her back, troopers said.

The man then fled to the basement of the home, troopers said.

The task force found and attempted to take the man into custody, troopers said. The man refused to follow instructions and lunged at officers with the large butchers knife, troopers said.

The trooper fired once, hitting the man in the upper body, troopers said. Authorities said the trooper feared for his life, the paper reported.

The man was taken to Strong Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and he was last reported to be in guarded condition, troopers said.

The man’s identity was not immediately released by police.

State police are at the scene, and an investigation into the police-involved shooting is underway, troopers said.
