Manhunt Underway After Officer Killed in New Zealand Shooting
WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A suspect remains at large after shooting at police officers during a routine traffic stop in New Zealand on Friday morning, killing one and seriously injuring the other.
The incident in Massey in West Auckland “unfolded very quickly,” Police Commissioner Andrew Coster told a news conference Friday afternoon.
“This is a shocking situation, this is the worst news police and their families can receive,” he said.
Coster added that the officers were not carrying firearms.
A member of the public who was hit by the suspect’s vehicle as they fled the scene remains in hospital with minor injuries.
The second police officer remains in hospital in a serious condition.
Police believe there were two people in the vehicle but only one gun, which Coster described as a “long-barreled firearm.”
There is a large police presence in the area and nearby schools have been closed as a precaution.
Coster did not provide any details about the suspect, but said the investigation team will soon release further information.
