A Greene County, Missouri Sheriff's deputy was seriously injured after being assaulted by an inmate on Saturday.
The deputy was working at the Green County Jail in Springfield when the attack occurred, according to a department news release.
The deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries including a multi-fractured nose, fractured jaw and a concussion. Sheriff Jim Arnott said the deputy required staples to his head.
"Men and women in law enforcement place themselves in danger daily to protect our citizens," Arnott said in a statement. "But when an officer is injured or suffers a violent assault, there is an amazing support from within the law enforcement family and our community. This was a horrendous event which could have had a much more different conclusion but it is the heroism of the other Correctional Officers on duty who swiftly and expertly resolved the situation."
An investigation is being conducted to determine how the assault unfolded and charges may be submitted to the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
