Albuquerque Police Horses OK After Protest

All seven of the department's horses -- who had rocks, sticks, bottles and flaming T-shirts thrown at them -- were cleared and put back into service.

Albuquerque police say that reports circulating on social media about a police horse breaking its leg during a fall and having to be put down following the protest outside a rally for Donald Trump on Tuesday are not true.

Striker, the horse that fell during the initial rush of rioters, sustained abrasions to his legs, but was able to continue his service for the rest of the night, according to police.

All seven of the department's horses -- who had rocks, sticks, bottles and flaming T-shirts thrown at them -- were checked on the scene by a veterinarian Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning.

The horses were cleared and were back in service for the Regional Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Dedication in Rio Rancho Wednesday night honoring fallen Officer Nigel Benner.

The nine officers riding on the horses suffered minor injuries including bumps and bruises and are all expected to be OK.
