Tennessee Bureau of Investigation officials said that the 40-year-old woman attacked and injured Deputy Gary Pickard shortly before 9 a.m. after becoming combative. The deputy ran back to his cruiser and called for backup.

Three Gallatin police officers arrive and were confronted by the woman, who was still holding the ax.

"From my understanding there were two shots fired," Gallatin police Chief Don Bandy told the newspaper. "Our officers were actually doing CPR on Ms. Sweatt. They were trying to assist until EMS got here."
