An escaped capital murder suspect in Vicksburg, Mississippi is dead after he was killed by a family he took hostage.

Rafael McCloud had been on the run since Wednesday when he held a corrections officer at knifepoint and stole his clothes before he disappeared, according to The Clarion-Ledger.

Police said that McCloud confronted a 30-year-old man and his 5-year-old son in the garage of their home in the 600 block of Fort Hill Road around 4:30 a.m. when he forced his way into the home and tied up the man.

By the time a 911 call was received around 7 a.m., the escapee was found shot to death.

Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said that while McCloud was holding the man, his wife and their son in the bathroom, the wife was allowed to leave and returned with a gun. She then fired one shot, hitting the suspect.

After the husband was freed, he fired additional shots, fatally wounding the man. The family then ran outside and asked a motorist to call 911.

Police found McCloud in the bathtub with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead by the Warren County Coroner and his body was transported to the Mississippi Crime Laboratory in Jackson for an autopsy.

The husband was stabbed in the shoulder during a struggle with McCloud, but his injuries are not considered to be life threatening but remained hospitalized Thursday.

"I hate that they had to go through that, but I’m very grateful and I thank God that no one was killed," Armstrong told the newspaper.

There was a $2,500 Crimestoppers reward that was offered in connection with finding McCloud but -- according to Crimestoppers rules -- the family cannot collect the reward.
