Wounded South Carolina Deputy Recovering

A Berkeley County, South Carolina is recovering and a suspected gunman is dead following a confrontation and a standoff in North Charleston Friday morning.

The incident began after Cpl. Kimber Gist attempted to make an arrest just after midnight in an unincorporated Goose Creek when a struggle with the suspect ensued, according to WCBD-TV.

Dispatchers lost contact with the deputy, who was shot during the struggle, and multiple units were sent to the scene. Officials said that there were rounds discharged from the deputy's gun.

Chief Deputy Mike Cochran told the news station that Gist was transported to Trident Hospital where she underwent surgery and is listed in serious but stable condition.

Gist has been on road patrol for just over a year, having served over a year in the Detention Center and Court Security. Officials said she is in good spirits and is thankful for all the thoughts and prayers.

North Charleston Police spokesman Spencer Pryor said the suspect entered a home on Bexley Street where three people were sleeping. After the suspect entered the home, the occupants exited and told police that the suspect was injured and bleeding.

Hostage negotiators were on the scene attempting to resolve the standoff safely and as quickly as possible, but officials later reported that the suspect died from  from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office, Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, North Charleston Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are all assisting in the investigation.
