A U.S. Marshals Service deputy in Sioux Falls, South Dakota shot and killed a man wanted for murder in South Carolina on Saturday.
Lonnie Haskell Powers Jr., who was wanted in connection with a murder that took place last month, was fatally shot after he pulled out a gun during an attempted arrest by law enforcement officers in a parking lot at 10th Street and Cliff Avenue, according to The Argus Leader.
Authorities received a tip that Powers was in Sioux Falls and contacted the detectives and marshals. The fugitive was then tracked down to the parking lot where law enforcement officers surrounded his vehicle. Powers shot once in the chest while still in his car and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina said Powers was wanted in the killing of James Anthony Hill, 55, who was found shot to death in his home on Dec. 13.
The shooting currently remains under investigation.
