Louisiana Deputy Shot; Suspect in Custody

A deputy in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana was wounded and the suspected gunman was taken into custody following an hours-long standoff Sunday.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Traci Landry told The Advertiser that the unidentified deputy was listed in stable condition at a local hospital on Monday.

Deputies responded to a residence in the 200 block of Dumesnil Road shortly after 6 a.m. following reports of a possible shooting. An injured man was discovered at the scene and the deputies were able to assist him before he was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

While on the scene, shots were fired at deputies. Other agencies responded and at some point during the incident, the deputies were fired at again.

For hours, the gunman remained barricaded inside the home and was taking into custody with injuries around 2 p.m.

"The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Deputy injured in the shooting yesterday morning continues to be treated at the hospital this afternoon," officials said in a statement. "The deputy is listed in stable condition and was able to visit with fellow deputies yesterday evening. Sheriff Mark Hebert expresses his thanks to everyone for their outpouring of concern and support."

Louisiana State Police is currently investigating the incident.
