NEW YORK -- A Monday morning shooting inside a subway station near Penn Station left one man dead and two others wounded, one critically, and police continue to search for suspects who fled in a dark-colored vehicle.

An NYPD spokesman said investigators believe the incident began with an exchange of words inside a McDonald's on Eighth Avenue near 35th Street and culminated with the shooting at 6:14 a.m. Police said the shooter, believed to be wearing a black hoodie, had words with at least two of the victims inside the fast food restaurant, then followed the victims down the subway stairs and fired at least four shots.

The dead man was identified only as a 43-year-old man who was shot in the neck, police said. Police said his body was found at the bottom of subway stairs.

Police said a 45-year-old male, shot in the neck and the abdomen, was taken to Bellevue in critical condition. The the third victim, a 48-year-old male, was shot in the right thigh -- and was taken to Bellevue in stable condition.

An MTA spokeswoman earlier told Newsday the shooting did not take place inside the subway station.
