BURKESVILLE, Kentucky -- A fugitive wanted in two states in the shooting of a police officer in Algood, Tennessee was killed in an exchange of gunfire with authorities in Kentucky early Friday morning.
Floyd Ray Cook was fatally wounded in the shootout with two Kentucky State Police troopers and one U.S. Marshal shortly after 1 a.m. near Burkesville, according to WTVQ-TV.
Investigators said a motorist contacted police after the 62-year-old suspect asked for a ride on Thursday in Cumberland County. A deputy spotted Cook shortly after that before he fled into the woods.
The deputy -- knowing that Cook was considered armed and dangerous -- did not follow the man and a perimeter was set up.
He was eventually found by the two troopers and the U.S. Marshal along an embankment near a home on Kentucky 61. Investigators said that Cook was armed with a handgun and exchanged gunfire the law enforcement officers.
The Cumberland County coroner pronounced Cook dead at the scene. The troopers and the U.S. Marshal were not injured in the shootout.
The manhunt began on Oct. 24 after Cook shot a police officer in the chest in Algood. The officer survived the shooting and is recovering from his injuries. Later the same day, Cook allegedly shot at a Kentucky State Trooper who had tried to pull him over. The trooper was not hit.
Cook fled the scene and remained on the lam until he was found.
